As temperatures drop, it can be more challenging to find outdoor activities that the entire family will enjoy. No longer will a simple trip to the beach or a stroll through nature be as appealing to reluctant children, or even adults. However, with the right and exciting activity, as well as the suitable gear, there are a number of great ways to spend the winter engaged in nature.
Ice Skating
Whether taking to a local outdoor ice rink or seeking out a frozen lake, ice skating is an easily accessible activity that everyone can enjoy. Families only need their own skates, which can often be hired at the rink, and the confidence to find their balance.
In addition to being a fun activity, it is also one that maintains fitness, increasing balance and toning muscles too, helping families to keep in great shape even during winter.
Sledding
If your local park is blanketed in snow, then it’s time to get your sleds and toboggans and head over to the hills. Sledding is a remarkably fun activity, especially for children, making it an easy sell on cold days. Be sure, however, that your path downhill is clear and that you’re at a safe distance from other people and pets.
Paddleboarding
While the trend of wild swimming might not allure children, to get kids out on the water might not be as difficult a challenge as you imagine. Paddleboarding is an easily accessible and exciting way to explore bodies of water, whether a seafront or a local lake. Different-sized boards are available for various family members and there is only a small learning curve that involves finding one’s feet on the water. Once the basics are covered, however, then the entire family will be good to go!
Skiing
Depending on which state you’re in, there may be the option for skiing, which is an excellent way for the entire family to experience nature as each individual speeds down snowy slopes. There is the initial investment of gear, though, as with ice skates, these can be hired. However, many families that begin to ski together soon find themselves purchasing their own skiing equipment for long-term savings.
Skiing creates memories for families, offering a true sense of adventure and accomplishment, while also developing skills and confidence for the little ones in the group.
National Parks
Visiting a national park during the winter often brings an amazing experience to families as they not only get an opportunity to see majestic landscapes in a beautiful way but to also be free of the tourism associated with the summer season.
Depending on your state, be sure to check for the accessibility of national parks nearby, especially as weather conditions become more temperamental.
Mountain Biking
Cold weather doesn’t mean the end of cycling and many find themselves preferring the crisp and chilly air for a long adventure across beautiful trails. If it does snow, many will simply equip their bikes with snow tires, also known as fat tires.
These large and robust wheels make crossing rocks and snow much easier, opening up landscapes to riders all year round.
